These symbols have a very special meaning to me… as a lover of African- American art, I was first attracted to them because of their beauty and rich African history. As I learned more about them I realized they spoke to me at a very deep level. These Adinkra symbols were first used as decorative elements in one of the most highly valued, hand-printed and hand-embroidered cloths of West Africa. The cloth was used exclusively by royalty and spiritual leaders for very important sacred ceremonies and rituals.

The meaning of the symbols represent the values and beliefs that are the foundation of my life and my work…

  • the chain link… unity and human relations
  • the crocodile… adaptability
  • the moon… patience
  • the elephant … wisdom & strength
